hmm i can't possibly imagine what you did wrong... i use fireworks all the time however, so this is relatively easy for me.

if you're not getting a nice clean edge be sure you have an anti-aliasing on and not hard edge.. if youre not getting an alpha bkg (the checkered squares) then you might try going to Modify > Canvas Color then selecting transparent

I tried it with one of my photos and couldn't get it to work! Nothing worked the way the article said it would. I tried it 5 times from scratch each time.
